About the role
The role will cover several stations within the South West region: Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset, plus the Channel Isles. Occasional travel with nights away will also be required and therefore, the role holder requires to be flexible to work out of hours when the need arises and be on a call out roster. The on-call rota is currently 1 week in 16 weeks.
We have a broad and interesting range of equipment needing to be supported and we welcome applications from suitably qualified technicians working within the following sectors:
- Commercial/leisure Marine maintenance/service/repair
- Construction equipment maintenance/service/repair
- Heavy goods vehicle maintenance/service/repair
- Agricultural equipment maintenance/service/repair
- Car/Van maintenance/service/repair
- Military equipment maintenance/service/repair
About you
We are looking for candidates with mechanical and electrical knowledge who can work with staff and volunteers to maintain some of the most prestigious and technologically advanced equipment at the RNLI.
This role is suitable for someone who is self-motivated and willing to go that extra mile. You will be able to work as a part of a team as well as on your own initiative to the highest of standards with a first fix approach to return RNLI search and rescue assets back on service as soon as possible. You will be willing to make and take on new ideas and undertake training where needed.
Requirements
- Minimum Level 3 NVQ, City & Guilds, HNC or equivalent in a mechanical engineering discipline which should also include electrical elements and ideally have a completed a time-served apprenticeship in a marine or vehicle-based engineering position
- A good knowledge of IT skills
- High-quality workmanship. The RNLI put its equipment through some of the most severe conditions, so precision and attention to detail is paramount
- Driving licence
- Driving licence B+E for towing and a forklift licence are beneficial but not essential (if required training will be provided for this)
- As this is a sea-going appointment, you will need to satisfy the Institution’s medical and eyesight standards

Internally we call this role a Regional Technician. Other organisations may call this role Marine Engineer, Plant Technician, Marine Maintenance Technician.
