Armed Forces Rugby League Team Day 2 Update

UKAFRL head coach Flt Lt Damian Clayton
spoke about his team’s first two-days in Sydney, Australia.

Staying at the Randwick, Army base,
Clayton held an opening day of training that featured a run out at nearby
Coogee Bay beach, which saw the players carry out a yoga class under the
instruction of S&C coach Sgt Paul McCormick, before the 24-man squad made
their way to the ANZ Stadium, Sydney to watch NRL side the South Sydney
Rabbitohs against Penrith Panthers.

Clayton said: “We’ve been in theatre
two-days and we are in a good place. We had a morning session at Coogee Bay, I
wanted to get the long flight and any lethargy out of their legs, we had an
S&C session which was 90 minutes and very hard work.

“We had them in groups of three,
positionally set up, so training against their opponents. They came of with
smiles on their faces, so we must be doing something write.

“This process started 12 months ago, when
I met them at the arrivals hall at Sydney Airport they came through not as RAF,
Army and Navy, but as team mates.”

The team will finish their
matches when they face New Zealand on July 12 at Windsor, before the third and
fourth place play off match on July 14, at Wentworthville with the final being
held at Pepper Stadium on July 16.
