Forces Festival and Community Games

Bedford International Athletic Stadium is to host a very special event in support of Armed Forces Charity SSAFA on Saturday 22nd June

The stadium, famous for world record-breaking achievements, will provide the backdrop for a spectacular celebration, honouring our armed forces with a range of sporting activities, music and games.

Starting at 11am, with an official flag raising ceremony, everyone is invited to hit the ground running, jumping, wheeling and buggy pushing in a community fun run. Of course help is also needed to cheer on the plucky participants. The run will be held over a distance of 1964 metres (The date the Royal Anglian regiment was formed) and all those who complete the distance will be given a special souvenir certificate.

If you still have any energy left after the run armed forces staff will be holding Military Fitness Tests, so you can challenge friends, family and the forces themselves.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “This fantastic event builds on the promises we made signing last years Armed Forces Covenant supporting the military and ex military personnel in our community. We really have got something for everyone, from sporting challenges and children’s activities, to rousing music. Not only does it provide an opportunity to have a great day out, but you’ll also be helping to make a difference to the lives of members of the armed forces and their families.”

From 11am, supporters can come and try sports and activity sessions around the stadium. Sessions taking place will include:

The packed programme continues with further family activities including a climbing wall, bouncy castle for children and the return of the 100m sprint challenge which proved popular at last year’s Live Site event.

Around the stadium, stalls will also provide a range of refreshments, face painting, fairground entertainment and details of local sporting opportunities. Information will also be available about the important work that SSAFA carries out and the difference the support from those attending will make. Music will also feature, with classics played by the Bedford Town Band.

The event will finish at 5pm with a traditional ‘beating the retreat’ closure.

Entry will be available throughout the day with refreshment stalls throughout the Stadium, but supporters are invited to bring along a picnic and enjoy the day whether as a spectator or participant.
