Captain Tom, now Colonel Tom has become the Honorary Colonel of the Army Foundation College in Harrogate, North Yorkshire with Chief of the General Staff, Sir Mark Carleton-Smith making the appointment, following approval from the Queen.

Colonel Tom has also been awarded a Defence Medal after experts realised he should have received one originally. This will now be added alongside his 1939-1945 Star, Burma Star and War Medal.

Colonel Tom who was told about his promotion in a letter presented by Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Miller, the commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, said, “The Yorkshire Regiment is one – if not – the greatest regiments and I am overwhelmed. It’s absolutely super.”

His birthday will be marked by two military flypasts later today, after the general public have sent over 125,000 birthday cards.
