The Armed Forces Community Keeping the Transport & Logistics Sector Moving

On Thursday 14th April, BFRS are hosting an Industry Specific Careers day for the Transport & Logistics sector at Greetham Valley Golf & Conference Centre, Oakham, Rutland…

British Forces Resettlement Services (BFRS) is a Social Enterprise focused on helping the Armed Forces Community through their transition to civilian life and beyond, who under the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) have been awarded its prestigious Bronze Award.

Our Industry careers event timing couldn’t be more perfect, it’ll serve as a great opportunity to support service personnel and their family’s transition, plus provide opportunities to those partners seeking new careers regionally and nationally whilst their husband/wife or partners continue their military careers.

“The current shortage of 45,000 HGV drivers in the UK is a serious issue for the freight and logistics industry, and FTA has long campaigned with its members to recruit people into the sector.”{1}

BFRS corporate partner, Drivers Direct Recruitment had a highly successful recruitment drive at our Catterick Careers Event, which took place on 17th March 2016. Commenting on the event, James Capewell, National Recruitment Manager of Drivers Direct Recruitment said: “Drivers Direct found the BFRS event at Catterick to be a fantastic day with a great turn out. The staff working at the event were extremely helpful and did a brilliant job. We received a large amount of potential candidates passing by our stand, of which many were keen to ask for advice about when they officially leave the forces and leave their information details with us.

"We were happy to answer their questions and register their details for follow up, regarding driving opportunities. We have already placed armed forces leavers into employment as a result of the event, filling some of our ongoing vacancies. We are looking forward to the next event and fully expect it to be as rewarding as this one”.

BFRS also have a personal understanding that those who have served in the Armed Forces are not all about the bullets and the guns. They have Logistic Specialists, who provide a critical role in charge of provisions in military stores around the world, who become experts in warehouse management and stock-room software. Other roles include Movement Controllers who direct and control transporter vehicles at ports, airfields and railway terminals, which keep troops, vehicles and supplies moving safely, combining a blend of professional skills. The Armed Forces provide personnel with opportunity to gain licences in all manner of vehicles, which provide the huge scope for when they do leave.

During the day there will be 3 presentations with organisations from the Transport & Logistics industry, plus breakout time for delegates to go and speak with companies exhibiting who are providing hundreds of opportunities. This will be a great chance for delegates to find out more about what is required for them to start a career within this industry or find a new opportunity with industry leaders such as Eddie Stobart, ASDA Stores Ltd and FedEx UK Ltd.

This event runs from 09.00hrs till 15.00hrs, with lunch and refreshments provided throughout the day, but delegates do need to register, which is free of charge, and free to attend.

We know that by bringing the commercial world and the Armed Forces Community together at these events, great opportunities and future careers are found. These also provide a great avenue to network with the large number of ex-military that are manning the stands.

The event is aimed at Service Leavers, the Reserve Forces, Veterans, MOD employees, and as mentioned their partners and families. This is an opportunity for those attending to meet national and regional employers, training providers and support services specifically linked to the Transport and Logistics Industry sector to discuss their transition or next career move in person.
