A group of veterans experienced the thrill of microlight flying during a special event organised by Taxi Charity for Military Veterans in collaboration with Flying for Freedom.
The flying day, held at Popham Airfield in Hampshire, gave veterans the opportunity to take to the skies in microlight aircraft and fixed-wing planes. The event was designed to provide a day of challenge and enjoyment while supporting the recovery and wellbeing of those who have served.
From weather delays to blue skies
The event was originally scheduled for 4 October but was postponed due to Storm Amy. It was rescheduled for 11 October, when veterans were welcomed with clear skies and calm winds.
Working with Blesma and Pilgrim Bandits, four volunteer taxi drivers transported the group to the airfield, where they were greeted with breakfast before a safety briefing. Participants included two Chelsea Pensioners, two Blesma veterans, four former Parachute Regiment soldiers and a double amputee who travelled from Cumbria to take part.
Taking to the skies
Veterans were equipped with flying suits and helmets before boarding two Flexwing microlights provided by Flying for Freedom. Airbourne Aviation supported the day with fixed-wing flights, simulator sessions and a hands-on C42 engine activity.
The flights, which lasted around 30 minutes, offered views over the Hampshire countryside, including Highclere Castle.
Terry Ward, a trustee of Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, said the day had a clear impact on those who took part. “It was an absolute joy to see the excitement and pride on the veterans’ faces as they took to the skies. It was a day full of camaraderie, laughter and inspiration.”
Graham Hennigan from Flying for Freedom described the event as a “huge success”, adding that the feedback from veterans was “truly inspiring”.
A collaborative effort
The day was made possible through collaboration between Flying for Freedom, Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, Airbourne Aviation, Blesma and Pilgrim Bandits, along with volunteer taxi drivers.
Flying for Freedom provides flying experiences as part of its recovery support for Wounded, Injured and Sick (WIS) service personnel and veterans, many of whom are volunteers themselves. The Taxi Charity regularly organises social events and trips to support veterans from across different conflicts.
