Walking With The Wounded (WWTW) has received a grant of £180,000 from the Veterans’ Foundation to expand delivery of its community-based mental health programme, Head Start.
The funding will enable the charity to offer an additional 100 therapy places to veterans who may otherwise struggle to access support. Head Start provides tailored mental health therapy for those adjusting to civilian life, including veterans experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues.
The programme aims to provide early intervention and reduce pressure on NHS services by offering rapid access to private therapy. It has been a key part of WWTW’s mission to support veterans as they navigate the transition from military to civilian life.
A former Army veteran who has taken part in the programme said:
“Therapy is hard, reliving events is hard, but talking does help and it has helped me to balance things in my head. I realise now that squaddies are different, and I want to let other veterans know that there is help out there and it is fine to ask for support.”
WWTW thanked the Veterans’ Foundation for its continued backing, describing the grant as instrumental in expanding access to vital mental health support within the veteran community.
The Veterans’ Foundation raises funds primarily through the Veterans’ Lottery and provides grants to support charities working with serving and former members of the Armed Forces and their families.
