Website Launched For Service Families In Scotland

Armed Forces’ families can now access a dedicated website that provides invaluable help and advice on schooling options in Scotland…

The Forces Children’s Education site has been launched on behalf of the Association of Directors of Education in Scotland (ADES). The site is specifically designed to provide support and information to educators, Armed Forces parents and veterans.

Carolyn MacLeod, ADES’ National Transition Officer, said: “Armed Forces families regularly have to move and change schools, and our new website is designed to have all the information they will need in one place.

“Similarly, many teachers and schools are not aware of the complex needs that Armed Forces children and their parents may have, particularly adapting to new educational environments and the emotional aspects of leaving friends and family behind. The site helps make educators aware of those needs.”

Importantly, the website gives families the opportunity to search for primary and secondary schools in specific locations, by service (Army, Royal Air Force or Royal Navy) and base. The site also has a number of useful resources including downloadable videos.

Parents can find out about the Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) approach in Scotland, as well as additional support needs information and guides on the country’s placing request system.

Educators from nurseries, schools and colleges across Scotland can find out how to recognise and support the unique needs of children whose parents are serving or have served in the military.

They have access to information on Admissions Guidance, which has been agreed by local authorities, the Scottish Government and the Ministry of Defence (MOD). There is also the chance to link to other organisations across Scotland for further advice, support and guidance.
