Nineteen housing organisations across the UK have been awarded £4.5 million in government funding to build new homes and improve existing facilities for veterans and their families.
The funding, announced by Louise Sandher-Jones MP, Minister for Veterans and People, will support the construction of 45 new homes and essential refurbishments under the Veterans Capital Housing Fund. The announcement was made during a visit to The Stoll Foundation’s Kings Road Park development in Fulham, where the minister officially opened Valour House – a new accommodation project for veterans and their families.
New housing and essential refurbishments
The funding forms part of the government’s £20 million Capital Housing investment and will be distributed across all nations and regions of the UK. Nine organisations, including those in Wales, London and the South-East of England, will receive major grants totalling more than £3.9 million. A further ten providers already supported by the fund will receive top-up grants exceeding £500,000.
The funding will not only create new affordable homes but also enable crucial refurbishments, such as roof replacements, boiler and window upgrades, and accessibility improvements. Since its launch, the Veterans Capital Housing Fund has distributed more than £12.5 million, helping thousands of veterans secure stable accommodation.
Support for veterans’ housing and independence
Speaking at the event, the minister said: “Every veteran deserves a safe, secure place to call home. That’s not just a moral obligation – it’s a promise this government is determined to keep. We’re delivering real change through the Veterans Capital Housing Fund, providing veterans and their families with the security and support they need.”
Will Campbell-Wroe, chief executive of The Stoll Foundation, welcomed the support: “Valour House will provide accommodation for veterans and their families for years to come. As the only specialist veteran housing provider registered with the Regulator of Social Housing, we’re proud to deliver high-quality homes at social rent in partnership with the Greater London Authority and the Berkeley Group.”
Part of wider efforts to tackle veteran homelessness
The announcement follows a series of government measures aimed at reducing veteran homelessness. In 2024, the Prime Minister committed to ensuring that “homes will be there for heroes,” removing local connection requirements for all veterans applying for social housing in England.
Additional funding of £3.5 million has also been provided to extend Op FORTITUDE and the Reducing Veteran Homelessness programme until March 2026. Since its launch, Op FORTITUDE has handled more than 4,100 referrals and supported over 1,000 veterans into accommodation.
A forthcoming Defence Housing Strategy is expected to expand homeownership opportunities for veterans and serving personnel, including priority access to purchase new homes built on surplus Ministry of Defence land.
