Volunteer recognised as part of Stirling 900

Mary Kenyon, the chair of the Forth Valley branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has been commended by Stirlingshire Voluntary Enterprise (SVE) as part of Stirling 900 for her contributions to volunteering in Stirling.

Mary has volunteered with SSAFA for over thirty years, supporting thousands of members of the Armed Forces family. In 2022, she was awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours List in recognition of her volunteering for SSAFA.

Now, as part of the finale for the city’s year-long birthday celebrations, SVE gave further recognition to Mary for her contributions as a volunteer. Mary was nominated for the Stirling 900 award during the 2024 Inspire Volunteering Awards, run by SVE. To acknowledge the efforts of all nominees, they were provided with a pin badge at a recent event scheduled during the Stirling 900 finale.

In the last year, Mary and the SSAFA Forth Valley branch have raised and administered £120k worth of goods and services for the benefit of 75 veterans and families, as well as referring many ex-service personnel and families to medical, housing, debt-advice and other specialist services, and hosted community events.

Mary commented:

“I feel very honoured to be recognised. It gives awareness, keeping all the amazing work the volunteers at the Forth Valley Branch of SSAFA do in the eye of the community.”

SSAFA has been working for the whole UK Armed Forces community for 140 years, since 1885. Its mission is simple: to reach and embrace the Armed Forces family, so they never battle alone.
