Alabaré receives £30,000 grant to expand veterans’ wellbeing programme

A homelessness charity supporting former service personnel has secured a £30,000 grant to expand a nature-based wellbeing programme for veterans.

Alabaré said the funding, awarded by Veterans’ Foundation, will support its “Boots on the Ground” initiative, which works with veterans living in supported accommodation.

The programme uses outdoor and hands-on activities – including gardening, canoeing, bushcraft and conservation work – to improve mental and physical health, reduce isolation and help participants rebuild routines after leaving the Armed Forces.

Alabaré delivers more than 200 sessions each year across Wiltshire, Hampshire, Gloucestershire and Wales. The charity reports that nearly 90% of participants see improvements in emotional wellbeing, while 35% experience better physical health.

Gary Chapman, head of veterans’ services at Alabaré, said the programme plays a key role in helping veterans move towards independence by building confidence, skills and a sense of purpose.

The grant will also allow the charity to expand activities and create more opportunities for veterans to engage with their local communities, including volunteering and conservation work.

The impact of the programme is reflected in individual stories, including one veteran who said the support had helped him overcome long-term addiction and rebuild his life after leaving the military.

The Veterans’ Foundation said the funding aims to support initiatives that deliver measurable improvements in wellbeing, with a focus on helping veterans regain stability and connection after service.
