Background
The Met Office recruits and trains its own Operational Meteorologists to ensure its world leading status in weather forecasting is maintained.
There is a requirement for new Operational Meteorologists to fill anticipated vacancies throughout our Forecasting network. Therefore, we are now recruiting for a new Operational Meteorologist Foundation Training Programme in Autumn 2018.
Joining us as a Trainee Operational Meteorologist, you’ll complete our internationally-renowned Operational Meteorologist Foundation Training Programme (OMFTP). This 12-month training programme is a mix of class-room based learning with examinations and on-the-job training culminating in vocational assessments to qualify you as an independent meteorologist. Training is delivered in the Met Office College in our Exeter HQ and at various locations around the UK. Once you have qualified, you will work at either our Operations Centres in Aberdeen or Exeter, or one of our frontline defence sites.
The OMFTP is designed to deepen your understanding and build your operational forecasting experience. We also focus on developing your broader skills such as customer engagement, communications and relationship building to ensure you can help us deliver our vision for Operational Meteorologists of the future.

Job Purpose
Complete the Operational Meteorologist Foundation Training Programme with a specified subset of competences contained within the RQF Level 5 in Meteorological Forecasting in order to become a qualified operational meteorologist.
Job Responsibilities
You will be working towards gaining the skills and capabilities to meet these job responsibilities as a qualified operational meteorologist.
- Prepare and deliver weather forecasts and impact based advice to customers through a variety of media.
- Monitor current and developing weather situations, taking decisive action where required in order to advise customers in a comprehensive and timely manner.
- Work closely with other meteorologists across the Met Office network to ensure a consistent forecast message is communicated.
- Manage and prioritise workload effectively, particularly in changing circumstances.
- Ensure services are delivered on time and in full and to the quality and standards customers expect from the Met Office.
- Contribute to the implementation and enhancement of work procedures and processes to help achieve continual improvement in service delivery.
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
- A degree in meteorology a physical science or mathematics (at 2:1 or higher).
- A-levels or the direct equivalent (e.g. Scottish Highers) in mathematics and physics. Alternative ways of demonstrating the required standard of maths and physics may also be acceptable. See the additional information given in the prospectus.
- Demonstrate your interest in the weather and how it impacts on you.
- Evidence of contributing effectively as a member of a team and an understanding of the importance of building and maintaining good working relationships.
- Proven ability to ensure people get the information they need, on time and in an appropriate manner/format.
- An appreciation of customer needs and the importance of good customer service.
Additional Supplementary Information
As well as progression in the field of operational meteorology through a number of opportunities including further training and overseas travel, Meteorologists can develop careers in other areas of the Met Office such as business, marketing or science.
For this post successful applicants to the Met Office are required to undergo National Security Vetting. To progress within this process you will need to obtain full security vetting before your start date, the criteria for full security vetting is that; within the last 5 years you must have lived in the UK at the same address for 2 continuous years OR lived in the UK for at least 3 years.
