East India provides a Personality Disorder Service to up to 16 male in-patients detained under the Mental Health Act. The ward is within one of the largest NHS Medium Secure Hospitals in the UK.
East India operates as an adapted Democratic Therapeutic Community and attempts to create an environment, which turns experience into learning for both patients and staff. The model of treatment is action based and uses a range of approaches to support the psychological, physical and social functioning of the individual within the group setting. The community encourages understanding and exploring the interpersonal exchange between patients and staff as a method for learning and positive change. The emphasis is on promoting personal awareness and social functioning particularly as these relate to criminal behaviour.
This post requires commitment to working within a psycho social treatment model i.e. Therapeutic Community. Post applicants will need to be emotionally self-aware, be able to emotionally regulate themselves and have ability to empathise, understand and work with personality disordered patients within a forensic service setting.
Staff are trained in-house and are encouraged and supported with further relevant external training or coursework. Weekly Staff Support and Reflective Practice groups along with monthly individual supervision help support staff and their practice.
Basic salary is detailed in the NHS Jobs advertisement. This post includes rotational shift work: typically 3 long days a week or 3-4
night shifts a week up to once per month. This post attracts additional unsocial hours payments for night duties, Bank Holidays and weekends as well as Inner London weighting. Overtime (‘Bank’ work) is frequently available within the ward and wider unit.
