Veterans’ mental health charity Combat Stress has appointed Admiral Sir Philip Jones as its new President.

Sir Philip, a former First Sea Lord, served in the Royal Navy for more than 40 years. He joined in 1978 and went on to command the Type 22 frigates HMS Beaver and HMS Coventry. His early career included active service during the Falklands conflict, followed by senior roles including command of the Amphibious Task Group and the Fleet, and positions within the Ministry of Defence.

In 2016 he became First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, overseeing a period of modernisation across the Royal Navy before retiring in 2019.

Announcing his appointment, Sir Philip said it was a privilege to take on the role at a time when demand for specialist mental health support among veterans remains high. He said it was vital that the UK continues to meet the mental health needs of the military community and ensure services remain responsive and accessible as the Armed Forces evolve.

He added that Combat Stress has been a lifeline for many veterans and that he is committed to championing its work in the years ahead.

The charity also paid tribute to outgoing president General Sir Peter Wall, who steps down after several years in the role. Combat Stress thanked him for his advocacy on mental health provision and early intervention, and for supporting the organisation as it adapted to changing needs within the veteran community.
