The first deliveries of medical and care workers’ face shields made within a new hub at HM Naval Base Portsmouth will be handed to the front line fighting the epidemic.
Around 50 Royal Navy engineers have been working day and night, using five printers to create the headbands which are then assembled into masks with acetate sheets and straps.
The 3-D printers have been gathered from nearby training establishments HMS Sultan and Collingwood, and the Navy’s engineering outreach team, to make full use of them while their levels of normal activity are reduced.
