Greenwich Hospital Awards Grant to Lifeworks Programme

Greenwich Hospital is delighted to award Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) a grant of £48,000 to help support over 30 former Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel into employment or volunteering through its Lifeworks programme.

Lifeworks is a comprehensive employment support programme designed to equip veterans and the family members of those serving with the tools needed to find meaningful employment outside the armed forces.

Lifeworks targets those furthest from the labour market and has an acute focus on areas considered socially deprived. With this funding award, RBLI will run free to attend courses in Gateshead at HMS Calliope and Liverpool at HMS Eaglet to reach former RN personnel who can benefit from its intensive approach to employment or structured volunteering.

The programme starts with a four-day intensive residential course and is supported by a further 12 months of telephone and video coaching. Courses are offered nationwide and typically involve participants of all ages, backgrounds and ranks from across the armed forces community.  From experience, RBLI recognises the value of peer-to-peer sessions as an effective learning environment.

Jonathan Ball, Director of Grants at Greenwich Hospital, said:

“Our funding approach is aimed at ensuring former and serving Royal Naval personnel can thrive during and after military life. Supporting people to help them secure sustainable employment is central to our aims. We look forward to seeing some positive outcomes from this funded work.”

Emma Nugent, Assistant Director of Strategic Development at RBLI, said:

“Our Lifeworks programme was verified in 2023 and has achieved an 80% success rate for all participants securing work or volunteering within 12 months of attending the course. This is more impressive when you consider that 64% of those attending are overcoming mental health challenges at the same time.”

Course dates:

HMS Calliope, Gateshead: 3-6 March 2025

HMS Eaglet, Liverpool: 18 –21 November 2024
