To mark the 101st anniversary of the First World War, the Race of Remembrance is being run by the Mission Motorsport charity at Anglesey International circuit,Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th November 2015…
During the event 45 race teams will compete in a 1,000km endurance race and among the drivers there will be Mac Tools sponsored, Afghanistan veteran and double amputeeDavie Birrell. During a tour of Afghanistan in 2010, while serving with The Black Watch, Davie’s life was changed forever when he sustained injuries that would causehim to lose both legs.
While recovering from his injuries, Davie heard about the Want2Race challenge, a competition for budding race car drivers. Despite having prosthetic legs, he appliedto compete, and with success in the early rounds driving karts, he went on to take a Ginetta G40 round a race track. From the initial intake of 800 applicants, Daviewas the third fastest driver and his determination set him on a career as a racing driver.
Davie campaigned a Mission Motorsport car in the 2014 and 2015 Mazda MX-5 Championships with the support of Mac Tools. The brand and its people have a long history ofsupporting motor racing and when the opportunity arose to help Davie achieve his dream, the entire Mac Tools UK team had no hesitation in getting involved. In order tokeep the talented driver on the track to success, Mac Tools franchisees rallied together to fund the team for the entire 2015 season and the year’s racing efforts willculminate at the Race of Remembrance.
At the Race of Remembrance, an endurance race to raise money for the Mission Motorsport charity and a remembrance service, Mac Tools will be entering a team of three;Dave Birrell alongside Mac Tools franchisees Dean Foster and Phil Harrison.
“Mac Tools’ support has been epic, absolutely brilliant,” says Davie Birrell. “If it wasn’t for Mac Tools, its staff and its franchisees, I would not have been racingthis year, it’s that simple. It’s not just good for me it’s good for the whole of motorsport and I feel very fortunate to be backed up by the best franchise in the UK.To finish the season racing the Race of Remembrance with Mac Tools and in doing so raising money for the Mission Motorsport charity is a great honour.”
“Mission Motorsport team is a charity aimed at helping wounded soldiers through motorsport activities and Mac Tools is proud to have been able to support it throughoutthe year,” says Liam Kettlewell, Commercial Director for Mac Tools. “Mac Tools has always had a close involvement with UK motorsport and it is great to be able tosupport such a worthy cause. The way in which the entire Mac Tools family has rallied together to help one of our war heroes to realise a life-long dream in spite ofhis injuries has been incredibly heart-warming.”
