Lord Bruce explained that the River Forth had been the target of successive enemy raids in 1939 and as such the Forth Road Bridge has special significance for the RAF. During WW2, Spitfires from the City of Edinburgh squadron were responsible for shooting down the first German aircraft during the conflict, when the German air force launched bombing raids targeting the Rosyth naval base on the Forth.
