The University of the West of England (UWE) is one of the largest and most popular universities in the UK. It offers a wide range of courses to more than 26,000 full and part-time students and there is an expanding population of students registered on research degree programmes. UWE's overall research income has more than doubled in recent years, much of this research activity taking place in 33 research centres, and conducted in liaison with external agencies, companies, organisations and other academic institutions. The University is one of the largest employers in Bristol.
UWE prides itself on the professional relevance of its courses: many of the University's academics worked in a managerial or professional capacity before coming to HE, and this is reflected in the quality of teaching in the University. A number of new academic appointments have recently been made with the intention of strengthening research as well as bringing fresh perspectives into teaching.
