Veterans and supporters invited to sleep out at Stonehenge to tackle homelessness

Armed Forces charity Alabaré is calling on veterans, service leavers, and supporters to take part in a unique sleepout this November, raising vital funds to help break the cycle of homelessness affecting many across the UK – including members of the ex-Forces community.

The BIG SLEEP at Stonehenge takes place on Friday 14 November at the world-famous Stonehenge Visitor Centre, with up to 200 people set to give up their beds for the night in support of those without a home. The event is the first time the public has been invited to sleep out at the iconic site, made possible through a special partnership with English Heritage.

Funds raised will support Alabaré’s frontline work across the South West and Wales, where the charity provides supported accommodation and specialist services for those who are homeless or at risk – many of whom are Armed Forces veterans.

A powerful message from the military community

Veterans and supporters from across the region are being encouraged to take part, showing solidarity with those facing homelessness and sending a clear message of support.

Alabaré’s services go beyond temporary shelter, offering long-term support through housing, mental health care, skills training and employment guidance – essential for individuals rebuilding their lives after crisis.

Among those taking part is the Mayor of Salisbury, Councillor John Wells, who has chosen Alabaré as his charity of the year.

“I’m looking forward to joining in with the activity, meeting all the people that’ll be doing the same thing to raise money, and I’m sure it’ll be a really exciting event,” he said. “Particularly being at Stonehenge for sunset and sunrise – it’ll be a unique opportunity, and I hope we raise lots of money.”

Mayor of Amesbury, Councillor Dr Monica Devendran, also helped launch the event, calling it “a powerful reminder that people shouldn’t have to face a night without shelter.”

Helping veterans rebuild

Alabaré has a long-standing record of supporting former Armed Forces personnel, offering veteran-specific accommodation and tailored support programmes. Events like the BIG SLEEP help fund that work, while also raising awareness of the challenges veterans can face when transitioning into civilian life – particularly around housing, employment, and mental health.

Entry costs £20 for adults and £10 for children, with fundraising targets of £175 and £100 respectively. The experience includes stargazing with the Cranborne Chase National Landscape team and a private sunrise visit to the Stonehenge monument for top fundraisers.

All funds raised will go towards Alabaré’s homelessness services, including its Homes for Veterans programme.
