Over £1.7m awarded to Armed Forces charities through Veterans’ Foundation Major Grants Scheme

Ten UK charities supporting the Armed Forces community have been awarded more than £1.7 million in the latest round of the Veterans’ Foundation Major Grants Scheme.

The scheme, launched in 2024, offers grants between £100,000 and £200,000 to organisations tackling issues such as mental health, wellbeing, homelessness, and social isolation among veterans and their families.

A total of £1,731,169 has been shared between the following charities: Walking With The Wounded, St John Red Cross Defence Medical Welfare Service, Veterans’ Growth, Tom Harrison House, Sacro, BRAVEHOUND, AF&V Launchpad Ltd, Everton in the Community, Armed Forces Equine Charity, and the Defence Gardens Scheme.

Among the recipients is Walking With The Wounded, which provides mental health and employment support to ex-service personnel struggling to adapt to civilian life. The charity has received £180,000 to expand its Head Start programme, which offers rapid one-to-one private therapy for veterans facing mild to severe mental health challenges. The funding will enable an additional 100 community therapy places and help with core operational costs.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “We know that early intervention and ongoing support is essential to support veterans’ mental health and wellbeing. This is particularly due to the unique challenges they face, the prevalence of mental health issues within our community, and the need for comprehensive support systems to facilitate their successful transition to civilian life and overall well-being. As more pressure is placed on NHS mental health services and Op Courage waiting lists, this award will continue to support individuals from the armed forces community access rapid one-to-one support.”

The Major Grants Scheme is funded through the Veterans’ Lottery, which has grown to become the UK’s largest single-charity lottery. Since its launch, the lottery has raised more than £30 million for over 500 charities across the country.

The Veterans’ Foundation continues to provide critical support to organisations working with veterans and their families, helping address some of the most pressing issues faced by the Armed Forces community today.
