UK Armed Forces salute 250 years of American independence

The UK Armed Forces will take part in celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence this summer, with the Red Arrows leading a month-long programme of events across the United States.

The Royal Air Force aerobatic team will appear at 13 events across seven states between 27 June and 26 July, including a major flypast over New York on 4 July as part of US Independence Day celebrations.

Royal Navy ships will also visit New Orleans and take part in the US Navy’s International Naval Review 250 in New York and New Jersey, while the Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines will perform during commemorative events.

The Ministry of Defence said the programme highlights the long-standing defence relationship between the UK and the United States, which remains central to Britain’s NATO-focused defence strategy.

Defence Minister Lord Coaker said the military relationship between the two countries was built on “unparalleled trust, professionalism and shared purpose”.

Air Vice-Marshal Mark Jackson, Air Officer Commanding No. 1 Group, said the RAF was “honoured” to accept the invitation for the Red Arrows to take part in the celebrations.

He added: “The Royal Air Force has a long, proud history of working side-by-side with the Armed Forces of the United States, whether that be on operations and exercises or by joining with other allies as part of NATO.”

Wing Commander Sasha Nash, Officer Commanding the Red Arrows, said the tour was an opportunity to showcase “the best of British” alongside allies and international partners.

The MOD said British and American forces have worked together for more than a century, including during the Second World War, operations in the Middle East and through ongoing NATO cooperation.
