Colonel Tom has also been awarded a Defence Medal after experts realised he should have received one originally. This will now be added alongside his 1939-1945 Star, Burma Star and War Medal.

Colonel Tom who was told about his promotion in a letter presented by Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Miller, the commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, said, “The Yorkshire Regiment is one – if not – the greatest regiments and I am overwhelmed. It’s absolutely super.”

His birthday will be marked by two military flypasts later today, after the general public have sent over 125,000 birthday cards.

Happy 100th birthday Captain, or should we say, Colonel Tom Moore, from us all at Pathfinder International magazine.
