SSAFA launches GP outreach scheme to improve support for veterans in North Yorkshire

A new outreach initiative has been launched in North Yorkshire to help GP practices better understand and signpost the wider support available to veterans and their families.

The scheme, led by SSAFA, aims to strengthen links between primary care teams and local support networks, ensuring members of the Armed Forces community can access help beyond medical treatment.

The pilot was introduced at Dyneley House GP Practice in Skipton, where healthcare professionals and veterans heard how SSAFA’s services can support individuals facing a range of challenges, including financial difficulties, housing issues and mental health concerns.

The initiative focuses on raising awareness among GPs and practice staff, who are often the first point of contact for veterans, helping them to identify patients with a military background and direct them to appropriate support services.

SSAFA representatives outlined the breadth of assistance available through its volunteer network, including one-to-one casework, access to grants, help navigating benefits, and connections to specialist organisations.

Beverley Robb, community engagement lead for SSAFA’s North Yorkshire branch, said many people are unaware of the charity’s role beyond healthcare, adding that closer collaboration with GP practices can help ensure veterans receive support earlier.

Dr Emily Frinton, a GP registrar at the practice, said strengthening links between primary care and organisations such as SSAFA can improve outcomes by ensuring patients are signposted to the right support.

If successful, the scheme could be expanded across other parts of the North and potentially rolled out more widely across the UK.
