A Civil Service employment programme supporting veterans and military families used last week’s 81st anniversary of VE Day to highlight its work helping members of the Armed Forces community move into civilian careers.
The Going Forward Into Employment (GFiE) scheme said it continues to focus on reducing barriers to Civil Service employment for veterans and military spouses, while recognising the transferable skills developed through military service.
The programme, which forms part of the Civil Service’s wider life chances recruitment initiative, works with departments to connect veterans and spouses with employment opportunities across government.

In a VE Day message, the GFiE team said qualities such as adaptability, leadership and problem-solving remain highly valuable within the modern workforce.
The scheme also highlighted the challenges many service leavers face when navigating civilian recruitment processes, particularly within the Civil Service.
One former soldier, who served for 24 years in the Army Air Corps and Intelligence Corps, described the programme as a “foot in the door” to the Civil Service after leaving the military in 2022. He said the pathway helped him understand Civil Service recruitment processes and supported his career progression after transition.
The initiative has also been engaging directly with veterans and military spouses through employment events around the UK, including the Mission Motorsport National Transition Event at Silverstone Circuit earlier this year.
GFiE said the programme is designed not only to support veterans but also military spouses and partners, who can face additional employment challenges linked to service life and relocation.
