Come and join SSAFA’s family fun-filled adventure break! This is a free mid-week residential, open exclusively to military families with children who have additional needs and disabilities – and siblings are welcome too.

SSAFA is running two 4-night family breaks this year:

  • Monday 16 August – Friday 20 August at The Calvert Trust, Lake District
  • Monday 25 October – Friday 29 October at The Calvert Trust, Devon.

Places are offered on first-come, first-served but do prioritise those who haven’t attended before. If you are successful in your application, depending on your location you will be allocated the short break nearest to you regionally.

The breaks will be with The Calvert Trust, which provides fully accessible centres which “enables people with physical, learning, behaviour and sensory disabilities to experience exciting, challenging and enjoyable outdoor activities.” The aim is to give military families the opportunity to spend quality time together whilst challenging themselves through outdoor activities and seeing each other achieve.

A previous attendee of SSAFA’s Family Break: “I want to say thank you for this opportunity. Normally I wouldn’t think of doing an activity trip, because I need to think of the whole family. But I would recommend this to everyone.”

Both breaks are in beautiful settings; the Exmoor centre overlooks a reservoir were all water-based activities take place. The Lake District Centre overlooks Bassenthwaite Lake. They have excellent facilities which cater to all needs and specialist equipment which enables all to try activities such as as:

  • Horse riding
  • Kayaking
  • Biking
  • Sailing
  • Archery
  • Abseiling
  • Bush craft
