Veterans Housing Scotland has appointed Alison Moodie OBE QVRM AE RGN RM as a Trustee.
Established in 1915, formerly Scottish Veterans Garden City Association, Edinburgh-based Veterans Housing Scotland aims to provide affordable rented housing for military veterans in Scotland who are disabled.
To recognise the sacrifices made, and to honour the concept of those disabled in service of their nation coming back to a country fit for heroes, it was agreed that a scheme based on the Garden City concept be created. This would give those who had been injured hope of a secure home in a safe community. Veterans Housing Scotland has grown to become the largest military charity in Scotland providing homes for disabled veterans.
Alison has valuable military medical experience including working with disabled veterans. She said: ‘I am delighted to be invited to join the Board of Veterans Housing Scotland, a charity which I have long admired.
‘The horrors of warfare can affect any member of the military in various ways – psychologically as well as physically; often worsening after discharge. Care for the health of veterans is the responsibility of all civilised societies. The homes provided by Veterans Scotland play a crucial role in aiding the wider recovery of our disabled veterans.’
Group Captain Bob Kemp, Chairman, is looking forward to working with Alison. ‘Today in Scotland, around 3% of all those assessed as homeless by local authorities are military veterans. The vast majority of those transitioning from military service do so without the need for further support, however for some there will always be a need for ongoing assistance.
‘In working to achieve our aim of providing a safe and secure home in a supportive community for our veterans we need a broad range of skills across our Board. There is no doubt that the specialist knowledge and experience Alison brings will be valuable.’
Today, Veterans Housing Scotland owns and manages more than 650 properties around Scotland housing over 1000 veterans and their families and is proud to have HM The Queen as Patron.
